Tian Yuan Tan is Shaw Professor of Chinese in the Faculty of Oriental Studies and a Professorial Fellow of University College. He researches in four broad areas outlined below, connected by his interests in the contexts of literary production, criticism, and performance in pre-modern China, the various means and forms through which texts survived, and the making of literary history:
- Pre-Modern Chinese Literature, Literary History and Historiography;
- Textual Studies and Editing;
- Imperial Court Culture and Performances;
- Reading Chinese Literature across Cultures.
